The Chocolate Atelier – Swiss-style Baking Classes by Chef Reto

Joo Chiat Road is a paradox. While retaining its old world charm reminiscent of its roots as a former Peranakan enclave, Joo Chiat Road today is a melting pot of offbeat restaurants and trendy dessert cafes. One can always expect to be pleasantly surprised by hidden gems along this bustling stretch. Our latest scoop this season is The Chocolate Atelier at Joo Chiat Road – a baking school owned by Chief Reto Marzari that offers baking classes in making your very own Swiss-styled bread, cakes, cookies and pralines.

Swiss national Chef Reto is an old hand in the business of chocolate confectionary, having started out his apprenticeship in the 1960s under the tutelage of Raymond Bachmann, founder of Confiserie Bachmann in Luzern, Swizerland. He subsequently moved into the hotel industry as a pastry chef for several years and was based first in Denmark before moving to the Philippines.

Aside from the industry insiders, few are aware that Chef Reto played an integral role in developing the chocolate industry in Singapore during the 1990s. Residing in Singapore during this period, Chef Reto worked with several homegrown chocolate pioneers to develop their craft, giving these brands a solid footing in the chocolate scene with other international players. Asked about the Singapore chocolate landscape today, Chef Reto said that much has changed since the 1990s, with many more budding local entrepreneurs entering the market alongside international brands.

Now in his early 60s, Chef Reto is still as energetic and as passionate about his craft. With his wealth of experience, he believes in giving back to the community by passing on his trade to baking enthusiasts. Because of this, Chef Reto has tailored a collection of home-baking classes ranging from chocolate cakes, cookies and bread to making your own pralines and truffles. Definitely something for Do-It-Yourself home-bakers to look forward to!
